  • Case Study: Northern Health Trust: Conditions Management Programme

Conditions Management Programme (CMP) is a programme working in partnership between the Northern Trust, the Northern Health and Social Services Board and Department of Employment and Learning (DEL). It has been developed as part of the Government’s agenda to help people with health conditions get back into the workplace.

When someone is referred, the CMP team leader meets with them to find out what support they need and to develop a plan and set goals to help them manage their condition. Individuals meet with Professional and CMP support workers and can take part in sessions that address stress management, confidence building, back/arthritic care, management of depression, cardiac management and improving lifestyle. Rosalind McLaughlin, CMP Team Leader Newtownabbey said, “The programme aims to help the person understand their condition; to find a better way to manage their health and increase the possibility of taking part in education and training. It helps them gain confidence and increase their chances of returning to work.”

    Training Group

During 2009 around 25 members of this team and Holywell Hospital Mental Health support staff received four days training on adopting a coaching approach and utilising coaching models and skills in their work with CMP and Community Mental Health clients. Staff included Team Leaders, Physiotherapists, Dietitians, Occupational Therapists, Mental Health Practitioners and Support Workers.

    Immediate Feedback:

Upon completion of the programme, participants gave this feedback:

88% gained new understanding for working with clients and 92% acquired new skills that they could utilise with client work. 92% reported enhancement to their professional development and 85% reported enhanced personal development.

93% thought the training delivered was excellent or very good and 92% felt the content was good or excellent. After the initial two days core training 100% expressed an interest in more coaching skills training and that was commissioned and delivered.

    Detailed Feedback:

    Rosalind McLaughlin, CMP Team Leader

“The coaching skills have really stayed with me and I use them daily in my work with clients. The listening skills have definitely improved my listening; I am much more aware of using solution questions and have absolutely moved away from giving advice. I focus much more on building rapport, using open questions, holding back from giving advice unless the client is really stuck and then I ask permission. GROW is a really helpful structure to use in sessions and does help the client focus on what they want and then how they can get it.

I do feel that coaching has made a big difference in the relationship I have with clients, the ability to set goals and achieve them that are from the client not from me. So it’s much more empowering and definitely builds confidence for clients. It does also blend really well with some of my existing skills drawn from CBT, NLP and my health care background.

    Donna Spiers, Mental Health Practitioner

I enjoyed the coaching, it gives me confidence and removes pressure because I don’t need to be the expert or have all the answers anymore. My client sessions are more positive as we do not spend time focusing on the problems but more on the solutions. I use GROW instinctively now and like the structure it gives to client work. The best outcomes, for me about using coaching is that it encouraged the client to take ownership of the solutions and it builds their confidence in finding the answers. I used to advice all the time and I just don’t need to do that anymore, sometimes I might offer a menu of suggestions to pick from but it’s up to the client to decide what they go for. I have practiced hard with silence too, it’s difficult but when I allow silence the client does come up with answers.

I feel more in control of sessions, which is odd because actually I have less control, the client has it all. Coaching has definitely helped me improve my outcomes with clients and it also helped me feel more confident and less under pressure. I would love the opportunity to progress more skills in this area”
